Francis Brio’s ‘Now or Never’ reveals the early potential of Producer Ruchiie

Music

Rita Okoye

Every producer has a record that offers the first meaningful glimpse of what they may eventually become. Long before extensive discographies, international collaborations, and industry recognition, there are projects that reveal the instincts, habits, and creative decisions that later define a career. For Nigerian female producer, Ruth Princess Oye, professionally known as Ruchiie, Francis Brio’s Now or Never serves as one of those records.

Released during the early stages of her professional journey, Now or Never captures a producer still developing her identity, yet already displaying an understanding of arrangement and musical structure that extends beyond her years of experience. Rather than overwhelming the listener with excessive production, the record succeeds through thoughtful construction and a clear sense of direction.

One cannot overlook the construction of the groove in the instrumentals. The rhythm section in this piece is formed by an interaction of the kick and snare, yet the accompanying percussion adds the unique features to the track. The light texture of the shaker continues through the whole arrangement, providing some drive for it, while additional accents made using percussion help to vary the arrangement without breaking its structure. This may seem unnoticeable, but all of these details add greatly to the energy of the record.

The other interesting part is the hi-hat programming in the track. Instead of keeping the same pattern throughout the whole track, the hi-hats change according to the development of the arrangement. Some bursts of rhythmic subdivision appear in order to accelerate the track at certain moments of time.

Yet another interesting aspect of the production of this song is the use of musical motifs. While most songs focus on using a single instrument to build the entire sound, in this particular song, the sound comprises of musical motifs that can be heard for some time before the vocalist enters the scene. These musical motifs make the song familiar and ensure that Francis Brio becomes the focus of this song.

When speaking about the low end of the track, one can notice that the producer seemed to have taken the balance of the entire track into consideration right from the start. Unlike trying to emphasize the low end of the track, the producer allowed it to work as a backing track behind percussion and the melodic sections of the track.

Now, one of the most amazing things about the record Now or Never is its arrangement development. The record does not rely on any sudden beat changes or any drastic sound changes to keep a listener engaged in the track. On the contrary, the instrumental is developed gradually by adding and deleting layers in the track.

Listening to this record again, it is possible to see which of the traits contributed to the development of Ruchiie’s skills as a producer in the future. It includes rhythmic details, focus on structure rather than complexity, and understanding how different components of a song fit into the mix.

While Now or Never represents an early chapter in Ruchiie’s career, it remains a significant one. The record offers evidence of a producer who was already thinking beyond individual sounds and focusing instead on how those sounds work together to create a cohesive musical experience. For listeners familiar with her more recent work, the song serves as an early indication of the creative instincts and technical discipline that continue to shape her evolving career.
