2026 World Cup: Blatter criticises FIFA over Balogun red Card reversal

Reacting to the decision, Blatter questioned the process that led to the suspension being cancelled.
Former FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, has criticised FIFA for overturning the red card shown to United States striker, Folarin Balogun.
Balogun was sent off during the USA’s match against Bosnia and Herzegovina and was expected to miss his country’s next game because of a one-match suspension.
However, FIFA announced on Sunday that the striker would be available to play against Belgium in the World Cup knockout stage.
Reacting to the decision, Blatter questioned the process that led to the suspension being cancelled.
In a post on X, he said:
“Red cards should only be overturned through proper rules, evidence and independent decisions.
“If a U.S. President speaks to the FIFA President and a player is suddenly cleared to play before an important World Cup match, people will naturally ask questions.
“Football must never become a place where political influence affects sporting decisions.”
Blatter’s comments add to the growing debate surrounding FIFA’s decision to allow Balogun to feature in the crucial World Cup clash against Belgium.
