Colombia looked the more dangerous side for much of the game, with Luis Díaz, James Rodríguez and Gustavo Puerta repeatedly testing Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless 120-minute Round of 16 contest that tested the resolve of both sides.

The evenly contested encounter finished 0-0 after regulation time and extra time, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the breakthrough despite periods of sustained pressure.

Colombia looked the more dangerous side for much of the game, with Luis Díaz, James Rodríguez and Gustavo Puerta repeatedly testing Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Puerta came closest in the first half when his powerful strike from the edge of the area was brilliantly tipped away by Kobel, while Luis Díaz also forced the Swiss shot-stopper into an important save early in the second half.

Switzerland, however, responded with opportunities of their own. Fabian Rieder, Dan Ndoye and Breel Embolo all threatened Camilo Vargas’ goal, but the Colombian goalkeeper remained equal to the task as the contest headed into extra time.

The additional 30 minutes produced even more drama. Colombia struck the crossbar through defender Jhon Lucumí’s towering header, while Jaminton Campaz and Juan Quintero both squandered promising openings. At the other end, Granit Xhaka and Zeki Amdouni came close to snatching a late winner for Switzerland, but Vargas kept the scores level.

With neither side able to break the deadlock, the tie was decided from the penalty spot.

Granit Xhaka, Zeki Amdouni, Cedric Itten and Ruben Vargas all converted for Switzerland, while goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as the hero by saving Cucho Hernández’s spot kick.

Colombia’s Davinson Sánchez also saw his penalty crash against the crossbar, proving costly despite successful conversions from Juan Quintero, Jaminton Campaz and Luis Díaz. Manuel Akanji missed for Switzerland by blasting over the bar, but Vargas calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal a 4-3 shootout victory.

The victory sends Switzerland into the World Cup quarter-finals and will now play Argentina.
