“I just came up with these lyrics really quickly,” Jagger said, explaining that he worked on the song alongside Keith Richards and producer Andrew Watt.
Mick Jagger has revealed that his new Rolling Stones song “Back in Your Life” was inspired by a personal experience of being ghosted after a brief romantic encounter.
The 82-year-old music icon opened up about the inspiration behind the emotional track during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, explaining that the song tells the story of a man who meets someone, shares a brief connection, and is suddenly left without an explanation.
“I just came up with these lyrics really quickly,” Jagger said, explaining that he worked on the song alongside Keith Richards and producer Andrew Watt.
Describing the story behind the track, Jagger said it follows “a classic story” of meeting someone, having a short fling, and then being ghosted.
When Lowe questioned whether the lyrics came from personal experience, Jagger admitted they did.
“Well obviously,” the singer responded when asked if he had lived through something similar.
Jagger then joked that despite his age and legendary status, he still has memories to draw from when writing about relationships.
“I’ve got memories I can draw on,” he said.
Lowe was surprised that someone as famous as Jagger could experience being ignored, asking who would ever ghost the Rolling Stones frontman.
Jagger simply laughed and replied: “It happens.”
The singer did not reveal who inspired the song or provide details about the relationship behind it, maintaining his long-standing privacy when it comes to his personal life.
Over the decades, Jagger has been known for his high-profile romances and relationships, but he has rarely discussed specific experiences behind his music.
The new track “Back in Your Life” will appear on the Rolling Stones’ upcoming album Foreign Tongues, which features collaborations with major artists including Paul McCartney, Robert Smith of The Cure, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Steve Winwood.
