Young people desirous of building outstanding careers must imbibe discipline, learning, and character from their days on campus. They must also show courage and shun the pitfalls of pride, drug abuse, cultism, cutting corners, and other social vices.
A veteran broadcaster who retired from the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, as director of programs, Mrs Eugenia Abu, gave the advice on Thursday when she delivered a stirring Special Public Lecture at the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State.
Titled ‘From Campus To Career: Designing The Future You Want,’ the lecture was organized by The Directorate of Advancement And Linkages of the institution and witnessed large attendance from the staff, students of the university and other members of the Lokoja community.
Abua said young people must conduct yourselves in a civilized manner, respect their parents, and other constituted authorities devoid of destructive tendencies while on campus. “Your character and instincts must reflect good behaviours. You must exhibit time discipline in attending to all your academic activities as well as the ability to learn throughout your stay on campus and beyond
“Try as much as possible while on campus to avoid involving yourselves in Cultism and other related social vices
“You must be intentional and courageous in your endeavours as it will impact your life and future career. Designing the future you want is by being intentional and courageous
“Honour your parents and stay focused on campus to build a better career. Face your studies very seriously and avoid much social media engagement that could distract your learning
“In summary, strive to do the right thing, respect for constituted authority, hard work, and dedication to all your endeavours,” Abu said.
Abu, a motivational speaker and doctoral student, used her career path as proof that there is no shortcut to success warning that people must be ready and observant at all times to identify new challenges and opportunities along their path
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye in his welcome address noted that the world does not reward those who chase every open door; but those who find the door built for them, and walk through it with everything they have.
“Our guest lecturer found her door. She has since spent a broadcasting and media career proving that talent, discipline, and clarity of purpose can carry a person from a campus somewhere to a career that spans decades, screens, and now, generations of viewers who never knew a world before her.
“To our students; and I say this directly to our Mass Communication students in the house today listen closely. You are not merely attending a lecture; you are receiving a masterclass from someone who did not wait for a career to arrive but designed one deliberately.
