The Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, Mr. Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has died after sustaining gunshot wounds in an attack by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in Lagos.
Ajiboye was reportedly ambushed on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi.
According to sources, the attackers intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor and opened fire, riddling the car with bullets before fleeing the scene.
Images and videos that surfaced on social media shortly after the attack showed Ajiboye’s white vehicle with multiple bullet holes on the windscreen and other parts of the body.
Although initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack after sustaining gunshot injuries, he was later confirmed dead while receiving treatment.
His death has thrown the Lagos chapter of the NURTW into mourning.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the NURTW, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye’s death as a devastating loss to the union.
In a tribute posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Sego said the late union official was a dependable ally, trusted friend and one of the strongest pillars of the union’s leadership structure.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable and committed ally,” he wrote.
He said Ajiboye’s unwavering loyalty, friendship and dedication to the union would remain unforgettable, adding that his contributions to TeamSego and the NURTW would continue to be remembered.
Sego extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and members of the union, praying for God to grant him eternal rest and comfort those he left behind.
Police authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the attack as of the time of filing this report, while the identity and motive of the assailants remained unknown.
