Surprising reason Spain’s World Cup winners got tomatoes as reward

Spanish footballers Gavi and Fabian Ruiz were given tomatoes equal to their body weight after helping Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The two players returned to their hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca after Spain defeated Argentina in the World Cup final. Residents welcomed them with a special ceremony based on a long standing local tradition.

The town honours local athletes who win major international titles by giving them tomatoes that match their body weight as a symbol of appreciation for their achievements.

Fabian Ruiz received 187 pounds of tomatoes, while Gavi was presented with 151 pounds, making a total of 338 pounds for both players.

Photos from the event showed the Spanish stars smiling and posing with crates of tomatoes as fans gathered to celebrate their success.

The tradition has been observed in Los Palacios y Villafranca for many years to recognise outstanding local athletes.
