Ondo: Four policemen arrested over ‘if you’re Igbo…’ viral video

Four operatives of Ondo State Police Command captured in a viral video threatening a motorist along the Lagos–Benin Expressway have been arrested.

The video, in which one of the policemen was heard telling the motorist, “If you are Igbo, I will detain you,” has gone viral, with concerns over the ethnic profiling by the officer.

However, spokesperson for Ondo Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, that the officer behind the statement and three others who were part of the team have been arrested.

He identified the officers as ASP Elomore Sodayo (AP/No. 207454), Inspector Adefila Adewale (AP/No. 332012), Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi (AP/No. 332449), and Inspector Odusola Peter (AP/No. 332369).

Jimoh also revealed that Ondo Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the level of culpability of each officer.

“The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined and professional institution that does not condone any form of misconduct, incivility, or actions capable of undermining public confidence, promoting ethnic division, or bringing the Force into disrepute,” Jimoh said during the briefing.

Jimoh said officers are expected to uphold professionalism, respect human dignity, and comply with the Force’s Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures at all times.

He also assured the public that the investigation would be conducted with fairness, transparency, and accountability, stressing that any officer found to have violated the Force’s ethical standards would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with established procedures.

The Ondo State Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to professional, intelligence-driven, and community-oriented policing, while encouraging members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through official complaint channels.
