Stanley Nwabali returns to action, shines for Chippa United

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali enjoyed a winning return to Chippa United after helping the South African club lift the Eastern Cape pre-season tournament ahead of the new campaign.

The Nigerian international featured as Chippa United defeated Ravens FC 1-0 in the semi-finals to book a place in the final of the competition.

The victory extended the club’s impressive run in the tournament and gave them the opportunity to compete for the title.

In the final, Chippa United faced Highbury FC in a closely contested encounter. Both teams were locked at 1-1 after regulation time, forcing the match to be decided by a penalty shootout.

Chippa United held their nerve from the spot to secure a 4-2 shootout victory and emerge champions of the pre-season tournament.

Nwabali recently returned to Chippa United after terminating his contract with the club five months ago.

His return was welcomed by the club and its supporters, with many expecting the Super Eagles star to strengthen the team’s defence ahead of the new season.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper established himself as one of Nigeria’s top goalkeepers with his impressive performances for the Super Eagles in recent international competitions.

His displays have also earned him praise in South Africa, where he remains one of the league’s most recognised goalkeepers.

Following his return, Nwabali is widely expected to reclaim the number one goalkeeping position at Chippa United as the club prepares for the 2026/27 South African Premier League season.
