At least 50 Lagos State workers on Monday evening escaped death by the whiskers when the staff bus conveying them home almost got crushed by a train.

•The bus that conveyed the workers yesterday.

The incident occurred at Agege area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, around 5.00 pm.

The bus with registration number CSB 13 was conveying the 50 staff to Abule Egba, Sango and other suburbs when the incident happened.

The driver of the bus carelessly attempted to cross the railway line even when the train, on top speed was less than 200 metres away.

Despite the blaring horn of the train, it was gathered that the driver entered the railway line not minding the risk.

Less than three seconds after the bus crossed the rail line, the train zoomed past the bus.

Several passers-by, motorists and traders were all shouting, thinking that the train had crushed the staff bus.

Some staff inside the bus blamed the driver for crossing the railway line when he knew the danger, saying he should have stopped for the train to pass.

Others were on the side of the driver, saying that the train did not hoot on time to alert motorists it was approaching.

A staff in the bus who craved anonymity told P.M.NEWS that the train was so close and that less than three seconds after the last tyre of the bus crossed the railway line, the train zoomed past and that people’s hands were in their mouth and blamed the driver for such carelessness.

As a result of the careless act of the driver of the bus, the police at Railway Police Station stopped the staff bus and whisked the driver away to the station for questioning.

For over 30 minutes, the driver was quizzed by the police.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the driver of the bus had been alleged to have been driving recklessly earlier on.

It is also observed that some drivers manning the staff buses drive recklessly because they claimed to be untouchable government staff.
