32 Athletes To Represent Ben Idahosa Varsity

At least 32 athletes will represent Benson Idahosa University, BIU, Benin-City, Edo State, at the 13thWest African University Games, WAUG, slated for University of Ilorin, Unilorin, Kwara State, from 27 March- 8 April.

Sports Coordinator of BIU, Eunice Adebayo-James, said that the institution planned to participate in seven sports at the Games because they are medal potential sports. The events are chess, table tennis, lawn tennis, basketball, badminton, athletics and swimming.

She disclosed that the school’s representatives will leave for Ilorin next Tuesday just in time to settle down and acclimatise ahead of the schools sports championship.

According to Adebayo-James, the athletes, who are in good shape for the Games, have expressed confidence of being the first private university in the sub region to win the WAUG Games.

“We want to set the record at this Games by becoming the first ever private university that will win the competition at the expense of other big names coming for the tournament.

“At BIU, we have standard sports facilities as well as quality athletes that are motivated to do the school proud,” she said.

Meanwhile, a novelty match put together to prepare the female basketball team of the school is scheduled for Saturday, 24 March.

It will be a battle between Bishop FEB Idahosa team against the BIU female team.
