1948 Classic Ferrari Corsa For £1.5m
It has no seat belts, carpets, wipers or even a roof. But this probably won’t annoy any potential bidders for this £1.5million Ferrari, a classic part of racing history which established the brand as one of the leading names in the business.
The beautiful 1948 Ferrari 166 Spider Corsa ‘Fontana’ was only the sixth Ferrari ever built in the Corsa chassis by legendary creator Enzo Ferrari.
It boasts an extraordinary and extensive post-war racing history, taking part in two Mille Miglias and two Targa Florios races in the space of four years.
Documented as one of the most raced Ferrari’s in existence, it has just been restored to mint condition and the auctioneers claim: ‘To lovers of Ferrari history this unique car is one of the most desirable in the world’.
RM Auctions spokesman Max Girardo said: “We’re thrilled to be offering one of the world’s most interesting Ferraris at our upcoming Monaco sale.
‘It is sure to attract serious attention from Ferraristi, it combines stunning looks with an extraordinary provenance and extensive, winning period race history.’
The ‘722’ is the ninth Ferrari in chassis sequence and the sixth 166 Spider Corsa built, and boasts an extraordinary and extensive period race history,
The car’s competition portfolio in the 1948 to 1952 period includes two Mille Miglias and two Targa Florios, during which time it was piloted by such notable drivers as Bracco, Maglioli, Frolian Gonzales and the Marzotto brothers.
The car was recently restored to and the auctioneers say it is ready to participate in any postwar historic racing or touring event.
The car will be auctioned in Monaco in May and, while listed for £1m, is expected to reach at least £1.5m under the hammer.
