NURTW Disowns Adekunle Salami

The Yaba branch of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, has denied some reports in the media that a dismissed member of the union, Mr. Adekunle Salami, is seeking reinstatement as the branch chairman.

A statement by the branch Assistant Secretary, Comrade Yekini Kareem, said Adekunle Salami was never the chairman of the branch as claimed by the news report and that his claims are baseless and false.

Kareem explained that Adekunle Salami became an executive of a unit through the use of force and intimidation in 1999 but because the tenure was ridden with crises arising from destruction of lives and properties in the Yaba area of Lagos, the executive was disbanded in 2008 and a caretaker committee was appointed immediately.

The caretaker committee with the approval of the Federal and State Council of the union constituted a new executive for the Yaba branch in 2010.

Kareem said some members of the disbanded executive who are genuinely remorseful have been absorbed back into the union as directed by the Lagos State Council led by Comrade Tajudeen Agbede.

The branch Assistant Secretary said the Yaba executive led by Mr. Israel Popoola has since its inauguration performed above board by ensuring discipline among members and protecting member’s interest.

He commended the national executive led by Alhaji Nasiru Yasin and the Lagos State Council Chairman, Comrade Tajudeen Agbede for obeying the directive of the national council to reinstate all members that were forcefully ejected.

He also expressed the union’s commitment to the Lagos State government by abiding by the rules and regulations of the state.
