Drunk Goalkeeper Sacked

Sydney FC has sacked goalkeeper, Liam Reddy for his drunken escapades before the club’s recent A-League elimination final.

The Sky Blues terminated Reddy’s contract today after several meetings to discuss his behaviour and future.

Reddy, who had been demoted late in the season to back-up goalkeeper, had admitted to drinking on the team flight to New Zealand to play the Wellington Phoenix.

It has been reported Reddy consumed alcohol both before and on the flight, and vomited on the plane and team bus to the hotel in Wellington.

The Sky Blues lost 3-2 to end their season.

The 30-year-old had one year remaining on his contract.

Reddy and his representative appeared at a meeting with Sydney FC acting chief executive Stefan Kamasz and football director Gary Cole on Thursday morning.

The club said it considered his response to a charge of serious misconduct levelled against him, before sacking him.

“Sydney FC today terminated the employment and contract of Liam Reddy following incidents that took place before, during and after a flight to Wellington before the recent semi-final,” Kamasz said in a statement.

“Those actions represented serious misconduct and do not reflect the actions we believe to be appropriate for a professional football player with Sydney FC.”

The club had originally charged Reddy with breaking Football Federation Australia’s player code of conduct.

But Sydney FC upgraded the charge to breaching his standard player contract, allowing them the option of sacking Reddy rather than just fining or banning him.
