UI Students Protest Over Power Outage

Students of the University of Ibadan, UI, disrupted vehicular movement today in the university and its environs as they trooped out in protest against the erratic electricity supply to the institution.

The students barricaded the main road leading to the university and prevented motorists coming from Ojoo area from passing through the main road in front of the university.

Motorists from Bodija Mokola axis were also forced to turn back.

The students displayed some placards decrying the institution VC’s insensitivity to students’ plight, and that his administration is not transparent.

They said the VC, Prof Isaac Adewole, is committed only to the welfare of the principal officers whom he recently bought new official cars for instead of using the money to address the immediate needs of the institution.

The protest was peaceful as policemen monitored it closely. The cops parked their vehicles at the university entrance and were on the alert to forestall any break down of law and order.

The policemen were led by the DPO, Sango Police Station, Mrs. Funmilayo Akinfenwa, who was seen trying to calm down the situation as she led some of the students back into the university campus.

She urged them to leave the main road and enter the university premises.

All efforts to speak with the executives of the newly sworn in students’ union government proved abortive as they were said to be in a closed door meeting with the VC at press time.
