Adefuye Volleyball Tourney Spikes Off 27 June

In a bid to rejuvenate volleyball in Lagos State, the state’s Volleyball Association will organised an inter-school championship later this month.

The school sports competition, Senator Anthony Adefuye Volleyball Inter-Secondary School Championship will hold from 27-29 June at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex, Rowe Park, Yaba, Lagos.

Chairman of the Lagos State Volleyball Association, Chief Martins Owolabi disclosed that at least 40 secondary schools will take part in both male and female categories of the tourney, which is being organised to discover young talents and bring the best out of the students.

According to Owolabi, volleyball can only be popular like football and basketball in Lagos if there are regular developmental programmes schools where young talents can be discovered.

“We want to use this tournament to discover talents that may represent the state in the forthcoming National Sport Festival, which Lagos is hosting this year. The competition will also help the participating schools produce good volleyball players for future school sports competitions,” he said.

The Publicity Secretary of the association, Femi Fagbeja said that all hands are on deck to ensure that the tourney is better organised. He commended the sponsor, Senator Anthony Adefuye for identifying with volleyball in Lagos and urged other corporate organisations to take a cue from the gesture of Senator Adefuye.

Meanwhile, the association has inaugurated a technical committee for the tourney. In the committee are Adeyeye Yemi, Coach Taiwo, Gerrad Callisto and Femi Fagbeyi.
