I Can’t Rely On Nigerian Tennis
Nigerian tennis player, Henry Atseye told DAMILARE OKUNOLA why he must go back to school to further his education
How has it been playing tennis over the years?
It has been very interesting but not easy at all. With the challenges that we face, things have not been good for local players in the country. Tennis is a game that I love so much that’s why I’ve been in the system till date.
How come much has not been heard about you prior to this year’s CBN Open?
That’s a question I can’t answer though I would love to give a concrete explanation. Much has not been heard about Henry Atseye because there has been dearth of tournaments in the country. I work with the FRSC. That’s where I am when there isn’s anything serious. I come out again when there is competition like the CBN Open.
How did you see this year’s CBN Open?
This was another well organised tourney and I want to personally appreciate the organisers for giving us this tournament. The CBN has been consistent in its organisation of the tournament for over three decades now, so I must really commend the efforts of the apex bank.
How is your education?
I started thinking of going back to school because I used to be a tennis freak such that all I wanted to do was just to play, but now, I think it’s time to go back to school. I’m currently seeking admission to the University of Abuja. which I hope will come through soon. With the way sports is going in this country, one cannot bank or depend on it totally, that’s why I think going back to school is an ideal thing to do now.
What has been your motivating factor?
The fear of losing has been my greatest form of motivation since I started playing tennis. With those younger ones coming up, I always strive to give my best whenever I’m playing and also try to encourage the upcoming players.
Do you have any role model in the game?
I used to like Andy Roddick because of his style, but Novac Djokovic is my man now. He has brought new things to tennis and I’m looking forward to performing like him or better than him someday.
