PHCN Workers Call Off Strike

Workers of the PHCN on Monday called off the strike embarked upon on July 20 following the intervention of the National Assembly.

The National Union of Electricity Employees told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that it was proper to call off the strike to create room for negotiations.

Mr. Etukubes Mbang, the Vice Chairman of the union, Lagos/Ogun chapter, told NAN that the intervention of the National Assembly was a welcome development.

According to Mbang, the strike has been put on hold and all gates leading to PHCN offices have been reopened this morning (Monday).

“We opened the gates this morning because the National Assembly is negotiating with our people in Abuja.

“Our people have been invited for discussion and we deem it fit to resume work pending the outcome of the meeting,” he said.

A visit to some of the PHCN offices in Lagos showed that the workers had resumed duties, although military personnel were on ground to maintain law and order.

NAN recalled that the workers had on July 20, embarked on strike to press for the payment of terminal and other benefits ahead of the privatisation of the company.

They said that it would be wrong to embark on the privatisation of PHCN without the workers getting their dues for serving the country for a long period.
