Word Up Debuts In Lagos

Word Up, a  poetry show  was premiered at the University of Lagos Guest House lecture theatre recently.

According to the organisers, the idea of starting the show, billed to hold quarterly, is to use poetry as an art form of  entertainment.

Olumide Holloway, one of the organisers, stated that the essence of the show is to use the platform as a tool to increase literacy level, and as a means of communication, education and information.

He noted that the group also  identified poetry in its multiple formats as a veritable means of employment generation.

“Our goal is to create a performance poetry and spoken word industry, where people can earn a decent living as performance poets.

“A Spoken Word poetry industry will help reduce unemployment in the country as awareness and sponsorship of the art form increases,” Holloway said.

Some of Nigeria’s leading performance poets including Sage Hasson, Jeffery Plumbline, Torpedo Mascaw, Uche Nwadinachi, Bob Ekat, and many others attended the ceremony and thrilled the audience.

Yeancah of Soundcity who anchored the event also performed his poems.
