Senator Bagudu aids indigent students

More than 600 indigent students have benefited from the scholarship programme initiated by Senator Atiku Bagudu, Malam Zaki Sarki, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers in Birnin Kebbi, has said.

Sarki said the programme initiated a year ago was to support indigent students with books and other facilities to enable them gain access to education.

The NUT chairman spoke in Birnin Kebbi on Friday that more than N4.6 million had been spent on the programme.

According to him, 5,000 cartons of exercise books and text books have also been provided by the legislator for issuance to primary and Junior secondary schools in Kebbi Central senatorial district.

He also said the senator had facilitated the provision of Education Trust Fund projects worth N32 million, including the construction of classrooms at Bagudu Memorial Primary school.

Sarki urged other elected officials in the area to also invest in promoting the living standard of the people.

He said: “The efforts made by government in the education sector required additional support from stakeholders.”

According to him, the increase in schools’ enrolment in the area has over stretched existing facilities and therefore requires the support of all stakeholders to improve the situation.
