NASUU Strike Cripples Activities In AAUA

The recent strike embarked upon by Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, AAUA chapter of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASUU has crippled activities in the school.

According to feelers from the institution, the workers protested the non-payment of a backlog of salary, dating as far back as 33 months (over two years now), saying that they won’t return to work until they are given their entitlements.

The strike, which begun about three weeks ago, was said to have been used by NASUU to persuade the school authorities to pay their arrears but it appears to have fallen on deaf ears as the Vice Chancellor seems not to have found an answer to the demands of the striking workers.

Narrating her experience since the strike began, a 300-level Mathematics student, Jumoke Gbadebo, said virtually every activity on campus has been grounded since the action began.

“Everything in the school has gone sour since the strike started. Activities have been grounded and we’ve been asked to go home. I only wish the VC does something about it as soon as possible because staying at home breeds idleness and this could result in many unpleasant things,” she said.

The students of the institution in Ondo, southwest Nigeria, have been asked to vacate the school premises indefinitely until a “lasting” solution is found to the problem.
