Two Elders Remanded For Failing To Foil Robbery

Two elderly security guards have been sent to Ikoyi Prison in Lagos after the police arraigned them before a Yaba Magistrate’s court for their failure to prevent night robbery in a company in Yaba, Lagos State.

The two men, Ndukwe Mba, 60, and Uwagbo Okorie, also 60, were alleged to have done nothing when armed men invaded a company and stole items worth millions of naira.

The duo were engaged as night guards by the residents of Joseph Harrison street, Iwaya Yaba Lagos.

P.M.NEWS learnt that though they were employed as guards, they had no arms, except sticks, torchlights and whistles, to perform their duty.

The robbers went to a company, BOT Engineering, in the night and carted away armoured cables worth N9 million.

The men claimed that even though they were employed as guards, they only guard the street and alert residents during any incident, which they did in the present circumstance.

When the company management resumed work in the morning and discovered  what happened, they blamed the two men for not preventing the theft. They went to report the matter to the police, alleging that the guards failed to perform their duty, thereby causing the company to lose a  huge amount. They were accused of stealing the items.

The police arrested them and filed three charges of stealing, felony and failure to prevent crime against them.

The men pleaded not guilty and the presiding Magistrate, Mr. O. S. Aka-Bashorun, granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. They have been remanded in prison custody until they meet their bail condition.
