Shun Road Abuse, FRSC Tells Nigerians

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Sunday advised Nigerians to shun road abuses believed to be responsible for the road traffic crashes.

The Sector Commander of the commission in Lagos, Mr Nseobong Akpabio, gave the advice at a church service to commemorate the World Day for the remembrance of Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) victims.

The service was held at the Apostolic Church Headquarters in Ketu, Lagos.

Akpabio said that 1.3 million people were killed in RTCs while 50 million others sustained injuries annually, adding that 90 per cent of the crashes occurred among low income earners.

“Those killed and injured could have been alive, if appropriate care had been taken.

“Contemporary investigations show that human elements cause 80 per cent of the crashes.

“Road traffic crashes are not accidents at all times because they are caused by human factors.”

He said that accidents were unexpected incidences but that the RTCs were caused by human and environmental factors.

According to him, causes of the RTCs include over speeding, poor maintenance of vehicles and other forms of abuses.

Akpabio advised road users to have a change of the attitude to ensure a safer road.

He also advised drivers to apply more caution while driving, ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles and observe traffic rules to avoid crashes.

The FRSC boss also appealed to all road users to join hands with the commission in the campaign for safety on the roads.

“Attitude of road users must change, regardless of who or what they are,” he said.
