Youths Advised On Use Of Social Media

A non-government organisation, Ipaja Youth Forum, IYF, has counselled secondary school students on the positive use of social media to better their lives.

Speaking at a one-day seminar tagged “Social Media: How It Affects The Youths”, held at Jogapepia Hall and Event Centre, Ipaja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, the IYF president, Mr A.K.J Shadare, said the aim of the organisation is to educate, empower and protect the interest of youths living within Ipaja and diaspora.

“So, investing our resources, time, money and energy into this seminar is not by accident but has only shown our focus and commitment in achieving our objectives.

“You will agree with me that the youths form the highest percentage of the users of the social media. It has both good and bad aspects and it is these reasons that spurred us to counsel the youths on the danger inherent in the abuse of social media,” he said.

The proprietor of St Daniels Group of Schools, Jimoh Daniels, urged students to be very careful of what they post on the internet and the kind of people they associate with on facebook, twitter and blackberry messenger.

“You have to be very careful while using the social media. Once anything is posted whether positive or negative, it will be very difficult to remove or retract because a million and one other users would have seen and copied it.

“Do not post anything that you don’t want the public to know about you. Students should not join the bandwagon. Be very careful of who you associated with on social media,” he urged the students.

The event which was meant for public and private schools located within the council area, had

Sound Hope Private Academy, St Daniels Group of Schools, Top Most International College and Anglican Comprehensive High School in attendance. Others were Essence Academy, Marigold College, Tower Gate Private School, Talent Link College and Community Senior Grammar School.
