Why We Train Our Staff —Assembly Clerk

Acting Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Ganiyu Abiru, has said that  the House will continue to train and retrain its staff since their emotional and socio-psychological well being has a major role to play in the progress of the lawmakers.

Abiru stated this while welcoming delegates to the five-day retreat for senior staff organised by the House at Bedrock Hotel Oko-Afo, Badagry on Monday.

The retreat which is facilitated by Messrs. Micro Enterprise Assist & Consult Limited with a theme, Emotional Intelligence and Principles of Success, is designed, according to Abiru, for emotional stability so as to enhance productivity of the senior staff and for them to know what is expected of them.

He said: “the essence is to make them to know what is emotional intelligence and what is expected of them in terms of their attitudinal disposition to their subordinates and superiors, to understand their mood, so that they can work harmoniously with them.

“This retreat therefore appreciates the importance of work relationship which if not managed properly would have cataclysmic effect on both the efficiency and effectiveness of officers and by extension the corporate goals and objectives of the House.”

He said the retreat was designed to provide a robust and fertile ground to cross ideas and engender out-of-the-box thinking.

Urging the senior staff to take advantage of the retreat for the benefits they hoped to derive, he added that, “for us to succeed as managers, our intellectual and psychological framework must be balanced and the leadership of the House would continue to invest greatly in the human element of our resources without which our goals may be difficult to realise.”

He reminded them that they were professionals who had made inputs in the preparation of bills and the process of passing them into law.

The clerk told the participants that they were being exposed to research so as to enhance the quality of bills that are eventually passed into law to improve the socio-economic realities of the times.
