Woman Docked Over Death Of Unborn Baby
A 25-year old woman, Yetunde Olafemi has been arraigned before an Ikeja magistrate’s court for allegedly causing the death of an unborn baby.
Police Prosecutor , Inspector Edet Okoi alleged that the defendant who is a teacher at Overcomers Nursery and Primary school,Ogba, hit the mother of the unborn baby, Mrs Rashidat Adesina in her stomach and in the process caused the death of the baby.
Okoi alleged that the incident happened at Overcomers Nursery and Primary School, Ogba where both parties are teachers.
He further alleged that it was the blow that Rashidat got in the stomach while she was engaged in a fight with the defendant that caused her seven-month pregnancy to be aborted.
According to the police prosecutor, Mrs Adeshina is currently in a critical situation at the hospital where she is on admission after doctors confirmed that the baby she is carrying is dead.
The two-count charge brought against the defendant reads:
“That you Yetunde Olufemi on 26 November, 2012 at about 9 a.m at Overcomers Nursery and Primary School, Ogba, Aguda, Ikeja in the Lagos Magisterial District did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace when you unlawfully attacked one Rashidat Adeshina and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 166 of the criminal law II vol.44 laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
“That you Yetunde Olufemi on the same date, time and place at aforementioned Magisterial District unlawfully kicked the stomach of one Rashidat Adeshina, a pregnant woman, an act which caused the death of her unborn child from being born alive and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 234 of the criminal law II Vol. 44 laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs A.J Anabor ordered that the defendant be remained in prison.
She subsequently adjourned the matter to 7 December.
