Delta donates 30 patrol cars to police

Nigeria’s Delta State with the notoriety of being the nest of kidnappers is determined turn a new chapter, as a state safe for the people and investors.

Its governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has launched a new security initiative, with the first act being to provide 30 Toyota Hilux vans, route and location branded, to the Nigeria Police.

The presentation of the vehicles was made Monday in Asaba, the state capital.

The 30 vehicles have been specifically designated for patrol and surveillance of specific routes and highways across the state, the governor said.

Handing over the vehicles to the police, Dr Uduaghan noted that the rate of kidnapping was coming down in the state and promised to continue to intensify efforts towards providing adequate security in the state.

He said he would provide a safe haven for investors and guarantee peace and security so that prospective investors would operate in a conducive atmosphere.

The Governor said the present effort was to beef up security and sustain the success already recorded in the state especially the reduction in kidnapping.

He explained that the vehicles have been assigned to different routes across the state to ensure that all areas in the state were adequately monitored and secured.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, while receiving the patrol vehicles, warned criminals to turn a new leaf and become law abiding citizens because his men would get them if they failed to heed his warning.

He commended Governor Uduaghan for providing the vehicles and assured that the vehicles would be properly utilized to combat crime.

“We will chase away criminals from the state. I warn criminals to leave the state because if they fail to we will get them anywhere they are hiding. I restate that there will be no hiding place for them,” Aduba said.

Delta was in the news last month with the kidnapping of Professor Kamene Okonjo, the Queen mother Ogwashi-Ukwu and mother of Nigeria’s finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The woman was released by her abductors after the family parted with ransom money, running into millions of naira.
