Several traditional chiefs who are believed to be interested in the throne of the Emir of Nigerian northern city of Kano have been quizzed by the police, as investigation opened into the weekend gun attack on Alhaji Ado Bayero.

“Nothing is being ruled out. We are spreading our dragnet, and we are putting all the clues to use; but so far, no arrest has been made as being reported by some sections of the media,” said a top security source.

The invitation of the chiefs came as the police detonated an improvised bomb found in a busy area of the city today.

Some Pedestrians on Monday afternoon discovered the wrapped object in a leather bag beside Guaranty Trust Bank on Murtala Mohammed Way, a very busy area of the city.

The Anti-Bomb Squad from Kano state Police Command detonated the IED at about 1:15 Monday afternoon, after the area was cordoned off by the Joint Task Force, JTF.

The situation temporarily halted business activities within the area and not without many, mistaking the sound of the detonated IED to another “successful” attack by the Islamic fundamentalists.

A security source hinted to P.M.NEWS that but for the timely intervention of security agencies, scores of lives would have been lost had the IED exploded at the targeted time.

There is, however, security beef up within the city, even as security agencies have commenced full scale investigation on the attack on the Emir of Kano.

Yesterday, Alhaji Ado Bayero and his wounded two sons were flown to United Kingdom for medical treatment.

The attack on Emir Bayero’s entourage last Saturday by suspected terrorists left five people dead and many others wounded including Sanusi and Nasiru, sons of the revered northern monarch who are also District Heads of Dala and Nassarawa Local Government Areas, respectively.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris and spokesman of JTF in Kano, Captain Ikedichi Iweha who spoke to reporters on phone at separate interviews on Monday, said they were not aware of any arrest in connection with the incident.
