Ivory Coast football star, Didier Drogba was happy seeing his dream to play in next season’s UEFA Champions League coming to fruition as Galatasaray sealed a record 19th Turkish league title by beating Sivasspor 4-2 in Istanbul.

Two goals from both Selcuk Inan and Burak Yilmaz gave Fatih Terim’s side victory with Sivasspor only able to respond though Kadir Bekmezci and Cihan Ozkara.

The victory, following Fenerbahce’s 2-0 defeat by Istanbul BB, took them ahead of the former’s 18 titles, and gives another title in another country to former Chelsea striker, Drogba.

Drogba played from start to finish but playmaker Wesley Sneijder, signed from Inter Milan and like Drogba a Champions League winner, played just under an hour.

The prolific Yilmaz, incidentally, this season now has 21 league goals; with Galatasaray are now 10 points clear at the top of the table with only two games left to play.

Coach Fatih Terim, in his third spell in charge of Galatasaray, retained the title after strengthening his squad with the signings of Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder earlier this year.

Terim was forced to watch his team’s triumph from the stands as he is serving a nine-match ban following a spat with a referee during a league match last month.

“We are deserved champions with the way we played and fought. I thank the fans as well. I greet all the Galatasaray fans around the world,” he said.

It was the sixth time that Terim has led the club to success in the Turkish league.
