Three Dutch citizens have been kidnapped in Nigeria’s southern oil-producing Niger Delta region, police said Monday.

The three Dutchmen were kidnapped Sunday when they were trying to access Ekeremor local council area in Bayelsa state, without police escort. Bayelsa is President Goodluck Jonathan’s home state.

Local terrorists operating in the area pounced on them and abducted them, Bayelsa state police spokesman, Alex Akhigbe said.

Dutch foreign ministry told AFP it was “aware” of reports that those taken were Dutch citizens.
