NSE moves against building collapse in Nigeria

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on Saturday said decisive measures were being taken to stop the cases of building collapse in the country.

Ademola Olurunfemi, the National President of the society, made the pledge at the ground breaking and foundation laying of NSE branch office in Yola.

The president, who was in Yola for a two-day visit, was represented by the National Vice President of the society, Kunle Mokolo

Olurunfemi said the society was disturbed by the number of cases of building collapse in the country, adding “the society is taking decisive measures.”

He said among the measures being put in place was effort to bring out the intellectual capacity of Nigerian engineers to eradicate the syndrome.

He stated that, all state branches should partner with their respective state governments, professional bodies and other stakeholders to establish a “Development Control Unit.”

According to the president, the unit will be responsible for overseeing all building projects in their respective areas.

“These include the examination of professional level and ability of the contractors, the building equipment standard, feasibility study, design and up to the finishing level of the project,” he said.

In his remark, Polycarp Samuel, society’s state Chairman, said at the state level, the members were working tireless to checkmate the activities of quacks parading themselves as genuine engineers.

He said the society had successfully stopped three building projects in Yola after cross examination and it was found to be dangerous if allowed to continue.
