Mother Begs Court To Free ‘Wild’ Son

The gavel of justice

An Abule Egba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday discharged and cautioned a 32-year old factory worker, Ifeanyi Chukwu, who beat and threatened to kill his mother.

The Magistrate, Mr. Tajudeen Elias, discharged Ifeanyi after his mother appealed to the court to release him from the KiriKiri Prisons, where she had begged the court to remand him following the assault.

The woman, Mrs. Helen Chukwu, told the court that she was missing her son and did not want him to lose his job.

“I pray the court to release my son; I miss him. I don’t want him to lose his job,” she said.

Ifeanyi was arraigned on June 19.

The accused, who lives with his mother at 15, Adeniji Street, Oko-Oba, Agege, a suburb of Lagos, was arraigned on a three-count charge.

At the arraignment, the Prosecutor, Inspector Rachael Williams, told the court that Ifeanyi committed the offences on June 15 at his residence.

She said that Ifeanyi beat his mother whenever she rebuked him for getting drunk.

Williams submitted that the factory worker also threatened to kill his mother and his sisters.

“A fight ensued between them; after beating his mother, the accused damaged four windows and a wooden door valued at N25,000,” she said.

The prosecutor had said the offences contravened Sections 56, 170 and 349 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
