Five transformers at Gowon Federal Housing Estate in Ipaja area of Lagos were vandalised in the last two days.

NAN reports that the acts of vandalism took place between Thursday and Friday. The vandalised transformers were those of BT 4 on 401 and 411 roads as well as the one on 6T 10 located within the premises of the FHA Office in the estate.

NAN also reports that among items vandalised were armoured cables linking the feeder pillar to the transformers were uprooted.

Another cable, an ‘upriser’, linking one of the transformers to an electricity pole was severed and carted away by unknown persons suspected by residents to be staff of the Ikeja Distribution Company.

Following the blackout, the residents of the estate have been experiencing difficulty in sourcing water as most of them depend on electricity to pump water from boreholes.

Mr Nathaniel Okoro, the Chairman of the Community Development Association, told NAN that the residents suspect that there was a link between the outages and the acts of vandalism.

He called for immediate restoration of electricity supplies by the Ikeja Distribution Company. “They owe it a duty to replace all the vandalised cables. The acts of vandalism was coordinated. This should be done in time because the residents are becoming restive,” he said.

One Mr Olaleye, who said he was head of the Akonwonjo District of IKEDC, confirmed the incident, saying staff of the company had been dispatched to the area to investigate the acts of vandalism.
