Driver jailed for stealing bus

An Egor magistrates’ court in Benin, on Tuesday sentenced a 29-year-old commuter bus driver, Oghenero Magaji, to nine months imprisonment for stealing a Vannette bus valued at N940,000.

Magaji who was jailed by the court on one-count charge of stealing, was said to have committed the crime on 23 December, 2015, at Ugbihokho Community in Benin.

The Prosecutor, C. S. Nnamdi, had earlier told the court that the bus marked Edo UBJ 693 XA, is property of Mr. Dennis Emiyenghaye.‎

He said the offence contravened section 390 (9) of the criminal Code Cap. 48 Vol. ll laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 as applicable in Edo.

The Magistrate, Mr. W. E. Aziegbemhin, who sentenced the convict to nine months imprisonment, however, gave him an option of N70,000 fine.‎
