Federal Fire Service to check substandard fire extinguishers

AS part of efforts to enlist the support of Nigerians, particularly importers and vendors of fire extinguishers in the fight against fake and substandard fire extinguishers, the Federal Fire Service will soon embark on an aggressive grassroots consumer sensitisation campaign tagged Vehicle Fire Safety Campaign (VFSC) across the country.
The campaign is aimed at educating the general public on the menace of fake and substandard fire extinguishers especially as it relates to vehicle fires.
The Controller General Federal Fire Service, Engr. Anebi Joseph Garba in a statement explained that the Service decided to embark on public enlightenment campaign aimed at effectively controlling indiscriminate importation and sales of fake and substandard fire extinguishers in Nigeria due to pervasive ignorance of the general public and motorists in particular.
Garba revealed that inadequate enlightenment campaign had further increase the incidences of fire outbreaks across the country.
The CGF identified arbitrary importation, unauthorized vendors, and lack of simple technology that will enable the general public to identify genuine fire extinguishers, as factors that had led to loss of lives and properties in the country.
He however said effort is being made to provide the general public product verification platform that will help them to detect fake fire extinguishers and also to enable other law enforcement agencies enforce compliance in commercial/homes/offices /markets and in the vehicles.
