The gavel of justice

Two unemployed men, Arepo Sikiru and Dare Ogunboye, who allegedly beat-up their neighbour, have been granted bail by an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The two, who were accused of assaulting one Boniface Ozor, were each granted N200, 000 bail with one surety each in like sum on Wednesday.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa said that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Sikiru, 40 and Ogunboye, 22, who both reside in Ajegunle area of Lagos state are facing a two-count charge of unlawful assault and grievous harm.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibeh, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 9 at Boundary Road, Apapa, Lagos.

Elibeh said that the duo assaulted the complainant by beating him up and using stone to hit his head.

“They had an argument about money, instead of settling the matter amicably; the accused pounced on the complainant and started beating him.

“The complainant was taken to the hospital while the accused were apprehended and taken to the police station by neighbours,” he said.

The offences contravened Sections 171and 234 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 171 prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders.

The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, and the magistrate adjourned the case to Aug. 10 for mention.
