The Nigeria Police Force is set to construct 500 housing units in Zamfara under its new Housing Scheme.
Maigari Dikko, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in-charge of Logistics and Supply, said this on Thursday while on a one-day working visit to the Zamfara State Police Command in Gusau.
The DIG said that part of his visit to the state was to solicit land allocation from the state government for the police to construct the housing units.
Dikko said that the new housing policy was initiated to end the housing problem among the rank and file, and would be on an “Owner-occupier basis”.
“It is unfair for one to have served the nation for 35 years and end up with no personal accommodation,” he said.
He said the policy was part of the measures by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to improve the welfare of police officers across the country.
The DIG said that the force would collaborate with private developers in the construction of the houses.
He said that 300 units would be allocated to the police.
“The other 200 units will be allocated to civilians by the private developers,” he said.
Dikko said that payment for the houses would be deducted from the salaries of beneficiaries.
“To ensure that it is convenient for the beneficiaries, the payment will be spread over a period of time,” he said.
He also urged the police to be proactive in the discharge of their duties, adding that their major responsibility was preventing crimes in the society.
Earlier, the Acting Governor of Zamfara, Alhaji Ibrahim Wakkala, had received the DIG at the government house in Gusau.
Wakkala promised to look into the land request by the police high command and pledged the continual support of the government to it.
