The College of Veterinary Surgeon of Nigeria (CVSN) in Abuja on Tuesday inducted 108 fellows and 13 members at its 3rd Convocation and 5th Investiture Award ceremonies.
The Provost of the College, Prof. Jarlath Umoh, in his address, urged the inductees to use the skills and expertise they had acquired to improve the standard of their profession.
He said that the college placed tangible emphasis on the acquisition of practical skills and expertise via a structured training programme and examination in various specialty areas of veterinary medicine.
Umoh stressed that the programme had made the trainees proficient in particular areas of specialisation, in the lead up to their entering into the consultant grade.
He, however, noted that the college was facing serious financial problems, saying that the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) had not taken the college as a priority project.
“I thank the VCN for initiating and funding the college, although the college has recently suffered greatly due to lack of funds.
“There are no funds to pay resource persons or hold academic board meetings and congregation of fellows.
“I, nonetheless, congratulate the awardees for their great sacrifice. Some of them are professors of longstanding and experts in their various fields but they were humble enough to undertake the training,” he said.
Umoh, therefore, called on the VCN to fund the college adequately, pending that time when bill on the college, which would ensure its independence, would be passed into law.
He, however, commended the VCN for initiating the training programme and for its support for the college so far.
The Veterinary Surgeons Act (No.40) of 1987 empowers the council to recognise professional postgraduate degrees and diplomas and provide basic training for advancement into specialist professional designations and consultant grades.
