The All Farmers  Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in  Kaduna State on Friday lauded the foresight of the Federal Government in  re-introducing the Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES).

The state’s  AFAN Chairman, Alhaji Nuhu Aminu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zaria that the re-introduction  of  the scheme would go a long way in boosting the morale of farmers.

“The scheme had remained one of the easiest ways  of getting fertiliser, especially by peasant farmers  who don’t usually have access to fertiliser  in the old system.

“The old distribution system used to favour politicians  some of who  are not real farmers, however, with GES, we are certain that a substantial number of farmers will benefit,” he said.

While appealing for sustainability of the scheme, the AFAN chairman urged the Federal Government to improve on previous disbursements.

“We want the Federal Government to continue with the scheme and make some little adjustments to make it more reliable, convenient and successful.

“Let the scheme start early so that farmers can get the fertiliser  at their disposal before the commencement of the rainy season.

“This will enable farmers prepare well to effectively take advantage of the rainy season for possible bumper harvest,” he said.

The chairman also appealed to farmers to make judicious use of the scheme to improve their revenue base and contribute their quota to  national growth.

He further advised Nigerians to support government’s  policies and programmes to attract more dividends of democracy.
