The death toll following flash floods in Northern Vietnam has risen to 26, with 15 people still missing and 27 others treated for injuries, authorities said on Monday.

The floods, which started on Thursday following heavy rain, killed 12 people in Son La province, six in Yen Bai province, five in Dien Bien, one in Cao Bang province and one in Lai Chau province.

The region, which is among Vietnam’s poorest, continued to receive heavy rainfall bringing the total volume of rainfall to 492 millimetres.

The rain damaged 340 hectares of rice paddies, while floods and landslides crippled much of the area’s transportation infrastructure, washing away bridges and roads.

More than 230 houses were destroyed and 425 houses were damaged by flash floods and landslides across the region.

The initial estimated damage is around 43 million dollars.

There was a forecast to receive more rain in the next 24 hours in the region which the authorities predicted to be less torrential.
