Court remands man accused of culpable homicide

Justice must be done
Court gavel.

A Magistrate’s Court in Minna on Friday ordered the remand in prison custody of a man, Muhammed Dange, who is being tried for alleged culpable homicide.

Dange is facing a 2-count charge of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, contrary to sections 97 and 224 of the penal code law, respectively.

According to Police prosecutor Hussaini Paiko, one Yusuf Jibril reported the matter at the station on Aug. 30.

Paiko quoted the complainant as alleging that Dange, alongside four others, now at large, invaded their (complainant’s) family cattle ranch in Minna, with dangerous weapons, and killed the cows.

“The complainant said that his aged mother, upon sighting the cows in a pool of blood, suddenly collapsed and died,” Paiko told the court.

When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate, Fati Auna, however, declined to take his plea on the grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

Auna ordered the police to forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice, and
adjourned the case to Nov. 8 for further mention.
