Some secondary school students in Edo have called on the Federal Government to ban the importation of gasoline generators so as to reduce carbon emissions which fuel climate change.
The students of Adesuwa Girls Grammar School, Benin, made the call at the inauguration the executive committee of the Initiative for Climate Education and Energy Awareness (ICEEA) Club.
The students’ sentiments were conveyed via a statement issued by the ICEEA Programme Director, Mr Ofure Osehobo, on Thursday in Benin.
The students, however, said that before banning the importation of gasoline generators, the Federal Government should invest in the provision of clean and steady power supply through renewable energy sources like the sun and wind.
They stressed that the provision of alternative energy sources would improve the standard of living of Nigerians because they were more affordable and environmental friendly, when compared with the current energy sources.
On his part, Osehobo said that inauguration of the club in the school was the third in the targeted 100 schools which would benefit from the ICEEA campaign of educating schools and communities in Edo on climate change issues.
He said that the project was aimed at sensitising the people, particularly youths and women, to the practical ways of adapting to the growing impact of climate change on the society.
