Iran’s Foreign Minister calls for immediate reconstruction of Syria

International help for Syria reconstruction must start without any delays, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, said on Wednesday.

He said this at a high-level meeting on Syria on the sidelines of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly.

“Reconstruction and return of refugees is an important reality now, it needs to start now,’’ Zarif said at the meeting.

The meeting was organised by the European Union.

“It is important for all of us to start helping Syrians as they are going home, right now,’’ he said.

Zarif’s remarks came on the heels of statements from U.S. officials, saying that there can be no financial help for Syria’s reconstruction until a plan for a political transition is in place.
