N/Assembly Tasked On LG Auditors General Office

The National Assembly has been urged to include the office of the Auditor-General  for Local Governments in the proposed constitutional amendment.

Mr. Mubasiru Hassan, the chairman of the Conference of Auditors General for Local  Governments in Nigeria made the call at a seminar organised by the group in Lagos  recently.

Hassan also appealed to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission  (RMAFC) to upwardly review the salary of Auditors General over and above the office  of the Permanent Secretary.

Hassan, who is the Lagos State Permanent Secretary and Auditor General for Local  Governments lamented the increasing rate of embezzlement among government officials  despite the presence of accountants and auditors at all levels of government, who  authenticate financial reports from various government parastatals.

Also speaking at the seminar, Mr. Lekan Ogunbanwo who represented Mr. Adesegun  Ogunlewe, Head of Service, Lagos State, called on Auditors General for local  governments in the country to confront the various malpractices and fraudulent  activities of public office holders with a true sense of accountability to humanity  and God.

Ogunlewe said both accountants and auditors in the country have a special role to  play in ensuring accountability and probity in government, stressing that their  ability to live up to their responsibilities will increase public confidence in  government. P.M.NEWS learnt that the conference, which was first of its kind, is  expected to be rotated among the geo-political zones across the country for adequate  coverage and attendance of members.
