Rescuers searching for the body of one the two passengers that fell off a commuter bus into the lagoon when the commuter bus that conveyed them somersaulted on Third Mainland bridge this morning in Lagos, South-West Nigeria

Two unidentified passengers drowned in the Lagos lagoon this morning as the commuter bus with registration number XW 124 LSR summersaulted several times on  the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos, South-West, Nigeria.

An eyewitness account said the 14-seater Obalende-bound bus was coming from Ketu. Its tyre exploded near the University of Lagos axis of the bridge and it  summersaulted several times. Two passengers reportedly fell off the bus and plunged into the lagoon, while others who are injured were taking to hospital.

As at press time, the corpse of a man in his 40s had been recovered by local divers while the search for the second body was ongoing. The bus was towed to  the Olowu, Lagos Island office of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.

A combined team of policemen and LASTMA officials were at the scene of the accident to ensure free flow of traffic after clearing the initial gridlock caused  by the accident.
