Students of Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE), Omu-Ijebu, Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun on Thursday staged a peaceful protest over the indefinite strike embarked upon by their lecturers.
The students, who blocked the entrances to the institution, said the protest was to urge the state government to pay the eight months salaries of the striking lecturers.
The lecturers had on Jan. 10 embarked on an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their eight months salaries.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the students were seen in groups singing solidarity songs, displaying placards with inscriptions such as “ Please pay our lecturersâ€.
Other inscriptions were: “Don’t turn our three years of study to infinity years,†and “We are tired of sitting at home.â€
Mr. Tosin Taiwo, Spokesperson for the students, told newsmen that government’s failure to pay the lecturers their eight months salaries could extend their stay away from the institution.
He noted that the lecturers were last paid in June 2010, which led them to embark on the indefinite strike.
The students appealed to the government to pay the salaries to ensure industrial harmony.
Mr. Cornelius Onanuga, the institution’s Deputy Registrar, said the authorities were making efforts to address the demands of the lecturers.
He expressed optimism that the workers would soon be back in school, and appealed to the students not to take the law into their hands.
