2011: Immigration To Foil Use Of Aliens

The Nigerian Immigration Service is set to foil any attempt by politicians to use illegal aliens to vote during the 2011 general elections.

Assistant Comptroller-General of Immigration (ACG), Mr. Tony Oklobia, in charge of ‘E’ Zone, said men and officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service have been trained to be more vigilant and dedicated in their duty posts to avert any attempt by politicians to use aliens during the forthcoming elections.

This he said, is to ensure that only eligible Nigerians of the age of 18 and above participate actively during the forthcoming election for a credible, smooth and fair exercise which is to be observed by the international community.

Mr Okolobia, who was speaking to newsmen in Calabar after the official launch of the e-registration of ECOWAS for foreigners and other nationals residing in the country, said by so doing Nigeria’s much desired democracy would be sustained and enhanced to the benefit of all.

The Assistant Comptroller-General who had served as the Commandant of the Nigerian Immigration Training School in Kano, said the service attaches much importance and priority to the training and re-training of its personnel.

According to him, “the issue of training is given priority by the Federal Government especially now that the Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Service, Mrs. Rose C. Uzoma is in charge as the head of the service.”

This exercise, he said, “is on going and it is on a very high tempo. Total discipline has returned to the service and any officer found wanting will have himself or herself to blame.

He said that the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service has always taken the issue of welfare of officers and men very personal and has done so much in addressing them since she assumed office.

On the issue of e-registration, he said, that the service is currently constructing prototype offices for immigration officers in the 774 local government councils in the country to ensure effective exercise, adding that “it is being handled in phases for now.”
