Use Pedestrian Bridge, KAI Boss Tells Lagosians
Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation Offences (Enforcement) Unit, Mr. Bayo Sulaimon, a Superintendent of Police, has appealed to pedestrians in Ojota to make use of the pedestrian bridges to avoid being arrested.
Sulaimon made the appeal when he led his men to enforce the use of the foot bridge at Ojota.
Sulaimon explained that the bridge was provided to save pedestrians from being killed while crossing the highway and wondered why people refused to make use of the bridge.
According to him, their refusal to use the foot bridge has often led to traffic disruption on the highway, which he described as abnormal.
“We were here in July last year, trying to ensure that people make use of the bridge. We thought that people will continue to use the bridge after we left. But after two weeks, we realised that people have gone back to their old ways of crossing the expressway. That is why we are here again today,†he stated.
Sulaimon also disclosed that the mission of the taskforce was not really to arrest offenders but to make them use the bridge. He warned that anyone who refused to use the bridge would be arrested and summarily tried at the mobile court near the bus stop.
He also warned his men and KAI officials in the area to desist from extorting money from pedestrians in the area.
“Anyone caught collecting money from defaulters will be dismissed,†he stated.
Captain Danjuma Maigeri, Marshal-General of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), also disclosed that his men had been told not to arrest offenders for now, adding that their major duty is corrective. This we will do cautiously,†Maigeri said.
Maigeri said those arrested will not be treated as criminals but advised to make use of the bridge.
He warned his men to desist from extorting money from those arrested as such act will not be treated with levity.
