Lagos Shuts Markets For Voter Cards

The Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of all markets in the state on Thursday so that  market men and women can go out and participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Chairman, Lagos State Market Development Board, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji, said the decision became  necessary to allow all traders in markets across the state to go out  and register.

The closure of the market is between the hours of 7.00 am and 2.00 pm on Thursday.

Deputy Chairman of the board, Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, who spoke on behalf of the chairman,  appealed to the traders to go out and register.

She urged all market leaders to mobilise market men and women to register.

According to her, all those who had registered should use the opportunity to monitor and persuade  their colleagues to do so.

The deputy chairman emphasised the need to educate street traders to desist from trading on the  road as they could be knocked down by moving vehicles.

Tinubu-Ojo said the board would monitor the exercise and ensure that market men and women actually  registered, adding that defaulters would be punished.

Last Saturday, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, ordered its members to stop  work that day to allow them go out and register.
