Return Of Schools To Owners, Stakeholders Caution Osun Govt
Stakeholders at a summit on the education sector on Wednesday in Osogbo cautioned the Osun State Government against its decision to return some public schools to their original owners.A communiqué issued at the end of the two-day summit said the decision was very sensitive and needed to be carefully handled.
The communiqué, signed by some members of the summit committee, Mrs. Modupe Ajayi-Gbagbo, Mrs. Kemi Adesina and Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, urged the government to hold necessary consultations with stakeholders before taking any decision. It said that government policies on education should be divested of political consideration, adding that appointments, recruitment and execution of projects in the sector should always be based on merit. The communique also urged government to accord the sector priority consideration to bail it out of the current crisis.It called for improved funding of the sector at all levels, stressing that funds allocated to the sector should be utilised judiciously. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that more than 1,000 participants from all parts of the country attended the summit, which received 38 memoranda from different stakeholders and the public.
